Secret Truck Plant Revealed! Most people think that the British truck industry is solely in the hands of niche specialists, but they couldn’t be more mistaken. We’ve been to the Leyland Assembly Plant to see where nearly 30% of new trucks on the UK’s roads are built. Ian Norwell popped on his hi-viz and toe-tectors. OF COURSE, everybody knows that commercial vehicles were built at Leyland in their hundreds of thousands in years gone by. The conglomeration of truck and bus plants there employed over 29,000 people in the ‘70s. The history is well known, with DAF’s acquisition of Leyland in 1987 being followed by the collapse of DAF itself in 1993, and the Dutch company’s subsequent takeover by Paccar, a big player in the US market, three years later.
